Founded by the United Nations General Assembly in New York in 1946 to provide emergency assistance to children in the aftermath of the Second World War, the organisation by the 1950s had grown to offer long-term support in developing countries. UNICEF UK backs education, nutrition, vaccine and clean water programmes, and emergency relief in natural disaster and conflict zones. The UK arm raised £5.6m in 2017 for children in Syria, while its Children’s Emergency Fund, which supports children in under-reported crises, raised £3.2m for work in countries including Bangladesh, Madagascar and Yemen. Goodwill ambassadors include David Beckham and Sir Roger Moore.
