Formally the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty, Britain’s largest membership organisation boasts 5.1m members. Large donations and bequests since its formation in 1895 have created one of the UK’s biggest landowners, with 248,000 hectares of land, 780 miles of coastline and more than 500 historic houses, castles, monuments, gardens, parks and nature reserves.The maintenance bill is big with conservation expenditure reaching £138m for 2018. Based in Swindon since 2005, properties include Beatrix Potter’s land in Cumbria and the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland.
