The Geneva-headquartered international humanitarian medical organisation, also known as Doctors Without Borders, has operated in zones of conflict and disease since 1971, when French doctors formed the charity in response to the Biafra crisis. With more than 30,000 personnel worldwide — the majority volunteer medical, logistics and engineer professionals and administrators - including 300 each year from the UK, it provides medical aid in 72 countries. In 2017, MSF UK made £35.9m grants to operational centres globally, including for Afghanistan, the Rohingya crisis, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria, migrant sea rescue off Italy, South Sudan and Yemen.
